Central team to visit flood affected areas
Hyderabad, November 2, 2006
The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday visited the flood affected areas. He, during his visit announced Rs.5000 crore for modernizing canals and drains to prevent recurrent heavy loss due to cyclones, even as the death toll rose to 28 in the coastal areas. He promised compensation at the rate of Rs.750 per acre and 50 percent subsidy to fresh crops, rescheduling of loans and early release of insurance benefits.
Nearly 10 lakh people in Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts turned out to be an ordeal as flood water stagnated in a large number of villages and towns even on Thursday. Nearly 580 villages in 29 mandals were flooded in Krishna district which is the worst hit areas. Due to inclement weather, the Chief Minister forced to travel by train upto Kavali and from there he traveled on road. The Chief Minister will be visiting to New Delhi to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh on the damage caused due to floods and heavy rains.
Disaster Management Commissioner Preeti Sudan said Central team was likely to visit the areas shortly. She said that the loss on all counts at Rs.762 cores based on the initial reports.
