Roof collapses in SCCL underground mine

Khammam, November 12, 2006

Four persons including a manager were killed as the roof of an underground coal mine of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) caved in Kothagudem on Sunday.

A foreign national and mining engineer of a private company both working on a new machinery introduced in the mine were however rescued after seven hours after the accident. Workers and union leaders rushed to the spot but failed to reach the workers trapped in the debris about 1.1 km away from the pithead. The rescue teams reached the spot immediately but it took more than four hours for them to clear their way. The SCCL has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Union Minister for State for Women and Child Development, Renuka Choudary, Khammam District Collector Sashibushan Kumar and Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena were rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed shock over the accident and he will be visiting on Monday according to sources.
