US gives approval to sell AIDS drug

NRTIS drugs prevent AIDS virus from reproducing

Hyderabad, March 31, 2006

The US Food and Drug Administration, an agency of the US Department of Health and Human services on Friday said it has issued the first generic approval for the capsule dosage form of zidovudine to treat HIV/AIDS to be marketed in the United States to the Hyderabad based Pharma limited. The tablet and oral solution dosage forms of zidovudine were previously approved for sale in the US when the patent on those dosage forms expired in September 2005.

Friday's approval for the capsule formulation of the drug follows the expiration of Glaxo Smith Kline's patent on its capsule form of the product marketed under the trade name Retrovir. Zidovudine is in the class of drugs called nuclesodie reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTIs) which helps the AIDS virus from reproducing.
