Andhra Pradesh joins other states for Mahyco Monsanto legal battle

Case to be put before Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission

Hyderabad, June 9, 2006

Andhra Pradesh along with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, West Bengal and Gujarat decided to jointly fight in the legal battle against Mahyco Monsanto Biotech Limited. The decision was reached after discussions by the Agriculture Ministers of the respective states at a meeting held in Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy chaired the meeting.

In a joint press conference by the Agriculture Ministers, the announcement of the understanding on the legal battle to be placed before the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MRTPC) and the Supreme Court was made. They Ministers also decided to invite other states to join them on the issue.

The states are asking for the supply of Bt. Cotton seeds at Rs. 750 per 450 gram pack. The state governments are arguing that the supply of the seeds is done at an extraordinary rate which is totally unacceptable.
