Meeting with political parties held

The State Election Commissioner, AVS Reddy speaking to media said that the notification for the Gram Panchayat elections would be issued any day before June 12. He said that a meeting was held with representatives of political parties on the conduct of elections. The political parties suggestions for submitting their respective lists of polling agents three hours instead of 72 hours as laid down by the Commission was discussed.
AVS Reddy said that the 72 hour interval was given to facilitate the police to verify the credentials of the agents and weed out those who had criminal record. There was a total agreement on banning liquor 48 hours prior to the polling date for ZPTC and MPTC elections and in the case of Gram Panchayat elections, the ban would come into effect 44 hours before the poll date.
As far as the expenditure is concerned, the Election Commissioner said that Rs.1 lakh for ZPTC candidates and Rs.50,000 for MPTC contestents, Rs.40,000 for Sarpanch candidatesin notified Gram Panchayats, and Rs.20,000 for non notified Gram Panchayats and Rs.3000 for ward members in notified Gram Panchayats. He said apart from general observers, videographers would also be deployed for elections.
