Jubilation at Gandhi Bhavan
Hyderabad, June 22, 2006
A Division Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court stayed operation of the order of Single Judge quashing the notification for elections to Panchayat Raj bodies. With this, the State Government and the State Election Commission (SEC) had a sigh of relief. The High Court bench maintained that it would not be in the interests of the public to withhold the electoral process but posted the main writ appeal to June 26.
After hearing counsel from both the parties in the morning, the bench headed by Chief Justice GS Singhvi announced the interim order amidst jam packed court hall. However, both the State Government and the State Election Commission have not reacted immediately on the judgment.
The Government has already spent over Rs. 40 Crores as a part of the preparation for the polls. The Congress workers burst crackers at Gandhi Bhavan as was done by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) earlier.
