Unanimous election of sarpanches suspended

State Election Commission gives decision

Hyderabad, July 29, 2006

The State Election Commission (SEC) on Saturday suspended the unanimous election of 10 sarpanches in Sodam mandal of Chittoor district following complaints by other contestants that their signatures in the withdrawal form had been forged.

Based on the preliminary report of the Chittoor district Collector, the Commission decided not to allow them to assume office. The SEC has directed the Collector to relieve four returning officers from election duties in wake of the report.

Challenging the unanimous election, the aggrieved candidates had lodged a complaint with the Collector. Basing on the complaints, the District Collector directed the Sub Collector to conducted inquiry. The candidates maintained that they have not withdrawn their nomination papers.
