Hyderabad, July 28, 2006

Security arrangements and intelligence network for the Panchayat Raj (PR) elections are in place in all the Maoist affected villages in view of the recent encounter in Prakasam district. Incidentally, Maoists are observing a Martyrs Memorial Week from Friday and have given a call for State wide bandh on July 31. Director General of Police (Law and Order) PV Naidu speaking to media said Special Forces from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were being requisitioned for the elections. Nearly 55,000 personnel would be deployed for the three phase elections to be held on July 29, August 2 and 6th.

Out of the 21,152 gram panchayats going to polls, 6177 are sensitive, 4806 hyper sensitive, 2738 troublesome and 3150 villages are affected by naxals. He said four persons were killed in poll violence. He said that the Grey Hound units were increased to 70. Each unit will have 35 personnel.

The Visakhapatnam District Administration has made all necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the first phase of Panchayat elections to be held in 11 mandals of Paderu division on Saturday. The District officials including the District Collector have organized gram sabhas to encourage the tribals to exercise their franchise in view of naxal activities. Heavy police bandobast has been made at seven villages which were identified as sensitive. The police officials in Visakhapatnam have identified 7 villages as sensitive, 17 hypersensitive, 24 troublesome, 209 extremist influenced and 13 inaccessible villages in the agency. Six CRPF, 13 APSP, 8 AR platoons, 12 special parties, 5 grey hound teams were deployed.
