Bank staff strike hit transactions

All public sector banks except SBI participated

Hyderabad, July 28, 2006

The strike by employees and officers of all public sector banks except State Bank of India (SBI) who are members of the three apex level organizations AIBEA, AIBOA AND BEFI went on strike and is in total. Cash and across the counter transactions were paralyzed in the banks. The State Government employees salaries are likely to be delayed due to the strike.

The employees demands include withdrawal of RBI circular on out sourcing of banking services, dropping the move to amend Section 12 (2) of the Banking Regulation Act on removal of ceiling voting rights in banks, filling of nearly one lakh vacancies.

According to a spokesman of public sector bank employees union, customers did not affect much on Friday as the banks ATM centres had sufficient cash. Members of the All India Andhra Bank Award Employees Union, affiliated to AIBEA struck work in response to the call given by the three unions.
