Police gets mine proof vehicles

Trucks built by Medak Ordinance Factory

Hyderabad, July 24, 2006

According to police officials, the State Government has handed over five improved mine proof trucks to the police involved in anti-naxal operations. The vehicles costing Rs. 50 lakhs each were given by the Police Transport Organization to the Superintendents of police of Kadapa, Khammam, Kurnool, Guntur and Karimnagar. The sources said that the remaining districts will have the same in a phased manner.

The trucks were built by the Medak Ordinance Factory that can accommodate 12 personnel in addition to the driver. This is the improved version and robust and heavy and fully air-conditioned.

Police sources said that the windowpanes and windshields are thick and there are several metal sheets underneath to withstand explosions. Those inside the vehicle have to fasten the seat belts else the chances are that they may hit the roof of the vehicle and may cause in deaths. According to reliable sources, the PTO has orderdered for five more mine proof vehicles with the Medak Ordnance Factory for the naxal operation purpose. It may be recalled Andhra Pradesh is one of the many states in which landmines laid by naxals claim the lives of police.
