More funds for rural infrastructure

State Government plans Rs. 4,000 crores

Hyderabad, July 16, 2006

After bringing about some major reforms in power sector, the State Government now plans to invest nearly Rs. 4,000 crores to improve the rural infrastructure in the coming three years. The State Government had already spent Rs. 2,500 crores in this direction.

At a review meeting on the performance of the Southern power utilities, the Union Energy Secretary RV Shahi commended the performance of the sector in Andhra Pradesh. The power sector that was incurring losses for more than a decade, achieved the distinction of making a financial turnaround after a gap of 12 years.

According to sources, the excellent performances of the power utilities are due to the improved internal efficiency and customer service, implementation of Electricity Act and strong regulatory process.
