Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam stresses need for water conservation
President of Indian, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has stressed on the need for conversing water bodies as pat of drought mitigation measures and asked farmers in dry land areas to cultivate Jatropha. He camp up with variety of responses to the queries posed by farmers, including women from five States during an interaction through video conference at the inaugural of the First National Virtual Congress of Farmers held as part of the 93rd Indian Science Congress on Thursday.

He had a lively interactive session with children at the Children's Science Congress. He fielded questions from child delegates with aplomb. He said 'Righteousness should come from home from the three pillars - father, mother and elementary school teacher.
The President suggested seven research missions for promoting sustainable rural development through Science and Technology. The areas are: Second Green Revolution, Seed Cotton productivity, Water treatment, Hill Agriculture, Floriculture and Horticulture, Flowering of Bamboo, Productivity increase in rice and wheat and Solar power Plants. Speaking on Solar Power Plants, he said that the Rashtrapati Bhavan has planned to setup Asia's largest solar power plant of 5 Megawatt capacity by the end of the year 2006. He said, "Solar energy is available everywhere. The scientists have to take up the challenge of increasing the solar cell efficiency from 15% to 45%. Research is essential using CNT plus Silicon photo voltaic cells which will make the establishment of Solar power plants competitive."
