Helmet made compulsary for vehicle registration in Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad, January 10, 2006
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has made it clear that Helmet is compulsory for the registration of any new or old two-wheeler in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad, Transport Minister K Lakshminarayana and Transport Commissioner Rajeshwar Riwari said that this decision was taken in the wake of directions from the High Court. It may be recalled that the High Court directed the Government to bring about campaigns to impart awareness of road safety - particularly in the case of usage of helmets and wearing seat belt in cars.
Two wheeler drivers in the twin-cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad already got used to the compulsory-helmet rule. The Government is now keen for the strict implementation of the helmet rule in other parts of the state in a gradual manner. The delay in this strict implementation is due inadequate supply of helmets in many regions of the state. A fine of Rs. 50 will be collected if the motorist is using a mobile phone while driving.
