Sarpanches rally turns violent

Police resorted to lathicharge

Hyderabad, February 3, 2006

A rally of sarpanhes from all over the State on Friday afternoon turned violent as the huge crowd of participants charged from Indira Park towards the Secretariat demanding instant redress of their grievances mainly withdrawal of the condition stipulating multiple authority for issuing cheques. The Police resorted to lathicharge twice as the crowd broke the cordon at the Katta Maisamma temple on Lower Tank Bund road. Ten persons including sarpanhes, sustained minor injuries as the police began whipping when the situation went out of hands.

After the lathicharge, the crowd squattered on flyover of Lower Tank Bund rod for over four hours during which time, the leaders went to meet the Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy at the Secretariat. The Chief Minister invited the delegation of the sarpanhes to his residence after initial talks with three leaders. During the hour-long talks between the sarpanhes led by YB Rajendraprasad, PV Ramireddy and the Chief Minister, the latter agreed to restore the cheque signing powers of the sarpanhes and order payment of arrears of honorarium for 38 months. He informed them that orders releasing Rs.158.7 crores towards 50 per cent grant under the 12th Finance Commission had been issued and the balance would be released soon.
