Bonded labour still high in the state
Hyderabad, February 24, 2006The National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern at the slow work on abolition of bonded labour and elimination of child labour in the State and directed the Government to take steps in this regard. These two issues were reviewed by Y.Bhaskara Rao member of the NHRC at a meeting with top officials of Labour, Social Welfare and Education on Thursday.
KR Venugopal, former Secretary to Prime Minister and Special Rapprterur of NHRC participated in the meeting. In a press conference, Justice Rao said he had told the official that not enough was being done to address the issue. The NHRC member reminded the official that the State had the highest number of 13 lakh child labourers among the States.
