Danish Newspaper pictures reason behind violence

Hyderabad, February 17, 2006

Violence broke out in the old city on Friday during a protest against pictorial depiction of Prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper and the old city is under tension. At least a dozen persons were injured in stone throwing incidents which forced the police to resort to repeated lathi charge. Windscreens of several buses were broken.

Traffic came to a grinding halt and shops downed shutters even as panic stricken college and office goers pushed back home. However, situation was brought under control by evening, tension mounted again as workers of Bharatiya Janata Party gathered near Charminar protesting against failure of the police to protect the innocent people. As BJP workers were unrelenting to call of their protest, heavy contingents of police were moved to the sensitive areas of the old city. As the violence mounting up, the Additional Commissioner of Police Tejdeep Kaur Menon intervened and took the Hyderabad MP to the troubled areas where he appealed to the protesters not to resort to violence.
