Telangana wave helped KCR to win
Hyderabad, December 7, 2006
The Telangana sentiment for separate Statehood fetched a resounding victory to Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhara Rao to win over the by elections with over a big margin of 2.01 lakh votes and retained the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat. KCR polled 3,78,030 votes defeating his nearest Congress rival T. Jeevan Reddy who secured 1,76,448 votes while Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate L. Ramana got 1,70,268 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ch. Vidyasagar Rao lost his deposits. KCR established an assailable lead over others in all segments since first round of counting which was taken up amidst tight security at the SRR Government Degree College in Karimnagar and he was declared elected after completion of 18 rounds of counting.
In Bobbili, Congress scraped through by wresting the Lok Sabha seat from TDP by a slender margin of 157 votes. The results turned to be a controversial with the opposition party seeking a recount a demand not conceded by the Election Commission. B. Jhansi of Congress won the Lok Sabha seat by defeating over his TDP rival candidate K. Appala Naidu over a narrow margin of 157 votes.
TDP leaders in Vizianagaram alleged that the returning officers have manipulated the result staged a dharna demanding recounting of votes. The delay of the official announcement resulting the TDP activists and even Congress activists took to the streets and held demonstrations seeking declaration of the result. The TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu speaking to media that he would lodge a complaint with the Election Commission about the malpractices and sought electronic voting machine-wise recounting. The police were left with no alternative to use lathi charge to disperse the mob.
