Hyderabad, December 5, 2006

Following the death of seven infants during the last 24 hours, the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday ordered immediate transfer of the Superintendent of the Hospital Dr. NCK Reddy, Resident Medical Officer Lakshmana Reddy and Department Head of Pediatrics Anantha Reddy with immediate effect.

According to a press release from Chief Minister Office (CMO), the Chief Minister had reviewed the situation at an emergency meeting with the Minister for Health K. Rosaiah and senior officials of Medical Education. He directed the I. Venkateswara Rao to enquire into the deaths and submit a report. He directed the Department to take action to improve the management of the hospital and patient care and to avoid recurrence of such incidents. He warned that any negligence on anyone's part would not be tolerated.

Principal Secretary, Health PK Agarwal and Dr. Venkateswara also visited the hospital and acquainted themselves with the happenings. Meanwhile a five member team of legislators of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by P. Keshav and three MLAs from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) led by G. Vijaya Rama Rao visited the hospital and interacted with the patients and the Superintendent. Speaking to the media, Keshav charged the government on the negligent attitude and demanded a judicial enquiry. Vijaya Rama Rao criticized the Congress government and TDP governments for neglecting the hospital and demanded the increase of staff, and proper supply of medicines.
