Turnout at 62 and 57 percent Bobbili and Karimnagar respectively
Karimnagar, December 4, 2006
Except minor incidents of clashes between the Congress and TRS activists, the by-elections at Karimnagar and Bobbili passed on peacefully and the police have sigh of relief. In this connection, it may be noted that the death of TDP MP K. Pydithalli Naidu necessitated the by election at Bobbili while the TRS president K. Chandrasekhara Rao resigned from the Union Cabinet for the by elections. It may be recalled that KCR won the elections in 2004 with a majority of 1.37 lakhs with the alliance of Congress.
The polling went off so smooth fully that no re-poll was ordered at any of the 2700 polling stations in both the constituencies. The chances of winning of TRS and Congress is 50:50 in Karimnagar as KCR could convince the voters on Telangana sentiment and appears to be an edge over Congress according to available sources while at Bobbili it is a suspense for Congress. A police officer was suspended for allegedly influencing voters in a polling booth in favour of TRS candidates at Podur village in Karimnagar district. Minor clashes stalled the polling at Bobbili for nearly an half an hour. According the Chief Electoral Officer V. Bhaskar, the final results will be available at 2pm on December 7, 2006.
