Hyderabad, December 2, 2006

The much furore over the warning signal on the beedi packs was put off said the Union Minister of State for Health Panabaka Lakshmi. The Centre has taken the decision to defer printing the symbol of skull and cross bones on beedi packs. This news is a big relief to the beedi workers in Karimnagar and other Telangana regions. It got significance in view of the by elections.

According to GO No. 297 issued by the Centre, printing the warning signal on beedi packs is mandatory with effect from February 1 next. She added that after considering the representation made by the State Government and beedi workers and public representatives, it was decided to put on hold the statutory warning and any decision in this regard will be taken only after consultations with the representatives of the respective workers organizations.
