CPM activists and police hurt in Sangareddy

Hyderabad, December 28, 2006

The dharnas sponsored by the Telugu Desam and Left parties respectively demanding nine-hour power supply to the agricultural sector turned to be violent on Thursday at Sangareddy in Medak district leaving many CPM activists and police personnel injured. Nearly a dozen police officials, including additional SP UI Madhukar Rao sustained injuries in stone throwing. Else where in the State, thousands of slogan shouting protests laid siege to office of power utilities. They squatted on State and National highways, disrupting traffic. While, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu took part in the dharna at Jadcharla and Shadnagar in Mahabubnagar district, CPI Secretary K. Narayana was arrested along with three hundred activists infornt of Vidyut Soudha in the Capital.

In Sangareddy, the dharna began at 9.30am when hundreds of CPM activists who turned up at the Collectorate, locked the front, rear gates in support of their demand, and also sought to meet the Collector to submit a representation. Though the Collector invited a group of leaders to his camp office, they refused and insisted on the official coming out and meeting them. The Collector at that particular point of time deputed the Revenue Divisional Officer to talk to the CPM cadre but no avail. After a three hour wait, the CPM workers entered the premised barged into the Collector’s room and damaged the furniture. Even they tried to enter into the Joint Collector’s Office and the police chased them.

The protesters hurled empty coconuts and stones at the police personnel injuring about more than dozen cops. The police in turn opened lathi charge on the CPM workers all the way to their party office. The condition of two CPM leaders was said to be critical as the police allegedly hit them in the stomach with riffle butts and granite stones. A constable suffered a fracture in the leg. TDP leader T. Devender Goud was arrested when he staged a dharna at Shamirpet on the city outskirts. Elsewhere in the State, the protests were peaceful according reports.
