Measures to conserve energy in the State
Hyderabad, December 27, 2006
The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy speaking to media on Wednesday said that the present crisis was not due to his government’s decision to implement free power to the farmers in vogue since May 2004. At the same, he urged the people not to overuse power and switch off lights to maximum possible extent and not to use air conditioners unnecessarily. He asked the urban local bodies asked to go in for alternate lighting of streetlights and switch them off at the break of dawn. He added that unless these steps were implemented, it is difficult to ensure seven-hour power supply to the farm sector.
Meanwhile, he reviewed the law and order situation at an emergency meeting on Wednesday in the wake of protests by farmers and the decision by opposition parties to stage demonstrations during the next couple of days. He directed the police administration to exercise maximum restrain following reports that some sections could be tying to attack sub stations. He asked the officials to strictly monitor the power supply situation earlier and charged the Opposition with politicizing the power crisis.
