Guntur, December 26, 2006The dacoits in a daring operation broke into the Chaitanya Godavari Grameena bank and decamped with 47 kg of gold worth Rs. 4.81 crore that was pledged by the public. According to police sources, this is the biggest in the history of Guntur and suspect the handiwork of interstate gang. An alert has been sounded in neighboring Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharastra including the State.
According to preliminary reports from the police department, that the culprits gained entry into the bank from the north side of the bank. They said it was difficult to guess the hour when the crime was taken place as the bank remained closed from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday morning. Incidentally the bank does not have a security guard or a night watchman and the bank Chairman BN Murty who visited the spot said and admitted that no security personnel as the bank was not in the list of banks approved by the Reserve Bank of India where security personnel need to be appointed. He said that the bank gave loans worth Rs. 2.59 crore to 1138 account holders against mortgage of gold.
