Government to spend Rs. 125 cores to procure power
Hyderabad, December 25, 2006
In view of the increased protests by farmers for supply of power, the State Government has stepped up efforts to tide over the power crisis by increasing the generation from Srisailam to 800 MW, purchasing additional power and urging the Central Government to immediately, supply 500 MW from the unallocated energy said the Minister for Power, Mohd. Ali Shabbir. He is dashing to Delhi on Tuesday to meet the Union Minister for Power SK Shinde to press the State’s request for the additional power.
The Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah said that apart from overdrawing from the Central generating stations, 100 MW was being purchased since Sunday from West Bengal and Calcutta Electricity Company. He said that the State was spending Rs. 4.8 cores a day to improve power availability. The additional expenditure for purchase of power was estimated at Rs. 121 crores this month and the State had also sought additional power from neighboring Orissa.
The Minister for Power said that the Centre had indicated that 250MW of unallocated power would be given besides agreeing to supply 115MW from the Kaiga Atomic Plant. He added that the State was facing a shortage of 2400MW in view of the sudden tripping of 1000MW unit of the Simhadri Plant and appealed the Opposition parties not to politicize the issue and cooperate with the Government.
