Farmers to intensify strike for power

Demands uninterrupted power

Hyderabad, December 24, 2006

Farmers demand for uninterrupted supply of power for atleast seven hours has turned shriller even as the Opposition parties announced agitation in their support. The farmers went on rampage at the power sub station in Karimnagar on Saturday, it is now the turn of ryots in Warangal district to get angry on Sunday. They even gheraroed Social Welfare Minister DS Redya Naik at Balpala and staged a dharna and a Rasta roko in Narasmpet mandal headquarters.

Farmers raided the Mannur sub station, destroyed the furniture and let set it on fire. Meanwhile, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) announced that nearly 2.5 lakh farmers would organize a blockade extending to 250 km of Hyderabad - Mancherial Rajiv Rahadai on December 29. CPI said that dharnas would be organized at all sub stations in the state on December 28 while the TDP is on a warpath preparing to lay siege to sub stations on December 27 and 28.

The power situation in the State continues to be bleak with the APTransco being able to purchase 548 Million Units from various sources as against the projected additional requirement of 2173 MUs between January and April 2007. Power Trading Corporation and JSW Power Trading Limited have agreed to supply power during February and March.
