Bill to be introduced in the next assembly session
Hyderabad, December 23, 2006Undergoing HIV test before marriage will no longer be a matter of choice but mandatory in Andhra Pradesh. In a move, which is likely to invite both support and criticism, the State Government has decided to introduce a Bill in the next Assembly session on making HIV test mandatory before marriage. The Minister for Health, K. Rosaiah said on Saturday that he would convene an all-party meeting shortly to evolve a consensus on the Bill. He opined that any party would not oppose the Bill or organization as AIDS test would not stand in the way of any religion or tradition.
He said that the State ranked first in the incidence of HIV/AIDS with an estimated 5.7 lakh to 10 lakh people being affected. He said that some girls and boys, despite testing HIV positive, were marrying without disclosing the truth, thereby affecting their life partners and children.
