Speaker suspends 40 TDP MLAs

Revokes suspension on the appeal by CPI, CPM and TRS

Hyderabad, December 20, 2006

For the second day, the Speaker from the House suspended forty Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLAs, including the Opposition leader for the morning session on Wednesday amidst high drama as the Opposition tried to keep up the pressure on the ruling party over the land issue of the Chief Minister. When the TDP deputy leader N. Janardhana Reddy seeking to raise the issue in Zero Hour over the land issue of the Chief Minister, Speaker KR Suresh Reddy said that the issue was being deliberated over the last three days and not good to take up the issue again. The TDP MLAs protesting the decision of the Chair rushed to the podium and insisted him to allow speaking.

At that particular point of time, the Legislative Affairs Minister, K. Rosaiah moved a resolution for their suspension. When the suspended members refused to move out of the House, marshals were summoned to take them out. Following the appeal by CPI, CPM and TRS, the Speaker revoked the suspension. Even then, the suspended MLAs did not turn but staged a dharna before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Assembly premises and raised slogans against the action taken.
