PCC urges speedy resumption of all assigned surplus lands

PCC president wanted others to emulate the Chief Minister and donate lands

Hyderabad, December 17, 2006

The executive committee of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee that met on Sunday suggested the State Government to speed up the process of resumption of all assigned, surplus and unused land for distribution to the poor. The executive, chaired by the PCC president K. Keshava Rao asked others to emulate the Chief Minister and donate whatever surplus or assigned lands they were in possession to the Government voluntarily.

Speaking to the reporters after the executive meeting, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy and K. Keshava Rao said that the Congress Government would have a sharper focus on distribution of land to the landless. They said that the Government had already distributed 4.3 lakh acres under Indira Prabha Scheme, an estimated 20 percent of the 55-lakh acres land was still under the control of the big wigs, and it should be resumed. They said that the government is considering to bring forth legislation for the purpose to take up the programme to its logical conclusion.

The AICC has prepared a theme paper on the measures to be taken in resuming surplus lands. The issue would also be discussed in the two-day brainstorming session of the State Congress to be held on January 4 and 5, 2007. The executive committee asked the government to resume the lands given to the corporates if they had not utilized them for the purpose for which they were given.
