Police lathicharge on the agitating students
Hyderabad, December 13, 2006A rally taken out by the activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) demanding payment of scholarships and increase in mess charges turned to be violent on Wednesday. Police used lathi charge on the agitating students and many of them were injured.
SFI protesting against the police lathicharge has called for a bandh of educational institutions on December 15, 2006 even as CPM, TDP and TRS extended their support to the cause of the agitating students. SFI activists called for 'Chalo Assembly' demanding payment of scholarship arrears and mess charges of students residing in BC and Social Welfare hostels. Nearly 2000 agitators including girl students ran to the policemen at Narayanaguda Cross roads and sat on the road demanding that the Minister for Social Welfare DS Redya Naik come there and make an announcement in the issue.
Meanwhile, stones were pelted on the police suddenly and that agitators bashed up some policemen with sticks. As the situation is slipping, they left with no alternative except to use lathicharge. Nearly 20 students were injured in the incident. The CPM State unit secretary BV Raghavulu reached the spot and condemned the incident and demanded the government address the just demands of the students.
