Hyderabad, December 11, 2006
The State Assembly on the inaugural day of the winter session on Monday adopted a resolution recommending the Centre exempt the beedi industry from the pictorial depiction of the skull and bones sign in the mandatory health warning. All parties have supported the resolution except Bahujan Samaj Party. The resolution said the recommendation was being made due to regard for the concern and apprehensions of lakhs of beedi workers without compromising on public health concerns. TRS floor leader G Vijaya Rama Rao wanted Rs.5 lakhs to be paid to the kith and kin of the beedi workers committed suicide in the wake of Centre's decision. The leaders of the TDP, TRS, CPI and Janata Party urged the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy to lead a delegation to Delhi to mount pressure on the Centre to concede the demand.
