Rosaiah says Colas issue is a Central subject

Hyderabad, August 9, 2006

At a press conference on Wednesday, Minister K Rosaiah said that the State Government has no powers to impose ban on the sale of soft drinks but can only check sale of soft drinks in the educational institutions. He said that this is the Central subject and asked the educational institutions to discourage the sale of colas in their campuses.

He said that the State Government has also asked Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) to collect samples of various soft drinks from different parts of the State and send them to Central Food Technology and Research Institute in Karnataka and asked the IPM to submit a report within a week.

At a high level meeting in Delhi, he got the assurance from the Union Health Minister Anubumani Ramdoss to look into the possibility of giving compensation to the people affected by viral fevers like chikun gunya. He said that the Health department is contemplating purchase of a mobile medical van equipped with diagnostic facilities and it is likely to cost Rs.70 lakhs. This vehicle can be taken to the villages where all people can be screened for various ailments on the spot itself.
