Central Government to release Rs.200 crores
Hyderabad, August 9, 2006
Truly whirlwind was Congress president Sonia Gandhi's tour of the flood raved areas of Amalapuram in East Godavari and Bhadrchalam in Khammam district and consoled the affected persons at their relief camps. She spent nearly 20 minutes at the relief camp at Amalapuram and hardly one and half hour at Khammam. At Amalapuram, she hurried through a photo exhibition depicting the flood losses and them made a round of the relief camp and shook hands with the barricaded flood victims. However, she has not given any public statement during the tour.
The Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Minister of State for Defence MM Pallamraju and local MPs explained the severity of the floods which inundated nearly 180 villages in 15 mandals in the district. She had not make any comment but the Congress party's AP Affairs in charge Digvijay Singh said that the issue of declaring the floods as national calamity would arise only after a special team visits and submits its report.
Before leaving for Delhi, the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil speaking with the media said that the State Government has been asked to submit proposals for immediate relief and permanent rehabilitation by strengthening the bunds along the course of Godavari river. He said that the Centre would consider extending assistance for the State Government's plan to complete the bunding of the entire 480km stretch of Godavari river course to protect people from recurring floods. He said that the Centre has released Rs.200 crores as immediate relief under Calamity Relief Fund and another Rs.70 crores would be released later.
