Chief Minister sought Army and financial assistance

Hyderabad, August 7, 2006

The Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy in a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh explained the vulnerable situation in the State due to heavy rains and floods. He sought assistance from the Army to civilian authorities in providing relief and rehabilitation operations. He requested the Prime Minister to declare the floods in the State as 'National Calamity' and sought to release Rs.180 crores.

The State Government pressed three more helicopters into service to provide relief of over 3 lakh people in Konaseema affected by breaches to the two tributaries Gautami and Vynateya. The death toll has crossed due to heavy rains and floods crossed 100. Three helicopters are air dropping food and other material in Khammam district while two from Reliance and one from Cairn are being operated in East Godavari District.

According to official sources, the Congress President and Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Ms. Sonia Gandhi will be visiting the flood affected areas in the State either on August 9 or 10 and is likely to call on the victims at Bhadrachalam and Amalapuram. The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil will also visit the affected areas on August 9 according to an official release.
