SHRC given interim order

Hyderabad, August 7, 2006

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has given an interim order banning Coco Cola and Pepsi drinks in all educational institutions both Government and private institutions. The Commission passed the orders following a representation by the Jana Vignana Vedika highlighting hazardous levels of pesticide content in the brands of the two soft drinks.

The SHRC headed by Justice B.Subhashan Reddy issued the orders to implement it with immediate effect pending further enquiry on August 17. The Commission ordered the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and the Management of the two companies to attend on that date.

The Centre for Science and Environment revealed that the two soft drinks contain pesticide content levels which are hazardous to health. The Director of Institute of Preventive Medicine said that it was decided to direct all Government educational institutions to not to allow the sale of these two drinks in the campus premises.
