Hyderabad, August 6, 2006

The third and final phase of elections to gram panchayats went off peacefully except minor incidents. The police opened fire in air to disburse the unruly mobs in some districts on Sunday. Tight police security has been noticed. The State Election Commission (SEC) has postponed elections in 591 panchayats due to heavy rains. In all, 923 panchayats were scheduled to to the polls in 25 revenue divisions.

In Ananthapur district, elections took a violent turn with clashes being reported from several places. Ten persons were hurt in stone pelting between Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers in Pedda Pappur manda. The injured were rushed to hospital. In another incident in Amalapuram, three persons were hurt in a clashes.

Sixteen persons including three policemen received injuries in a poll related incident in Miryalaguda division. Firing were reported from Miryampalli Prakasam district, Vaslatippa and S.Yanam villages in East Godavari District.
