Water levels in Godavari river rising
Hyderabad, August 5, 2006Water levels at Godavari river are rising and flooded hundred of villages in Khammam, East and West Godavari, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts on Saturday as theskies opened over North Telangana after causing havoc in north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Two IAF helicopters requisitioned from Bangalore and 12 motor launches were deployed to dispatch food and relief material to 123 villages that were either inundated or marooned and 200 other partially affected habitations in Khammam district. 53,000 people were shifted to 120 relief camps.
Hundreds of people were trapped on roof tops of their buildings until the motorboats reached them on Saturday morning. A high level bridge across the Sabari linking Kunavaram village and Vararamachandrapuram was submerged. The floods caused extensive damage and dislocation to road and communications. The highway traffic was completely disrupted. The Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the flood situation. He said that all the projects in the Godavari basin are in full. The Sriramsagar project received a heavy inflow of 5 lakhs cusecs and it is a matter of time before its sluice gates are opened. Nearly 30 lakh cusecs of water is flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
