Programme fails to gain momentum due to shortage of staff
Hyderabad, August 4, 2006The much publicized Indira Prabha programme launched by the Government in 2004 to develop barren agriculture land assigned to the landless poor has not yielded the desired results.
Implementation of Rs.450 crore project which aims at total transformation of lands, were not in use by the poor. Speaking to media after a State level workshop on 'Review of India Prabha Programme', Rural Development Commissioner S.Narsing Rao said that there was some confusion over the allotment of work to technical staff in some districts which delayed the implementation. People's Monitoring Committee comprising Dalit Organizations unions and NGOs conducted the work shop.
He said field staff was another reason the programme could not pick up momentum. The situation was fast improving with technical staff being appointed to cover three to four mandals each. There were instances where funds were not released in time. Funds for the programme were routed from banks to village organizations which in turn released them to the Common Interest Group (CIG) comprising farmers. He said district committees would be shortly constituted for effective monitoring of the programme.
