Hyderabad, August 4, 2006

The State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday directed the District Collectors of flood affected districts to postpone the third and final phase of Gram Panchayat polls on August 6 as many areas were marooned and communications cut off.

The SEC Secretary GN Rao in a circular to all Collectors said that under Article 243 K, elections to villages and places that were affected by heavy rain could be postponed.

He asked them to review the situation and send a report on gram panchayats where polling could be postponed. A fresh notification for the conduction of the elections will be issued after the situation improves.
