Hyderabad, August 31, 2006

The Health Minister, K.Rosaiah said in the Assembly on Thursday that nearly 76,462 suspected chikungunya cases from 22 districts in the State had been reported. He said the maximum numbers of 18,314 cases were reported from Visakhapatnam followed by Warangal, Kurnool, Anantapur, Chittoor, Prakasam and Mahabubnagar. The least number of cases of 453 was reported in Srikakulam district. He said that 15 mandals and 3790 villages were affected by the viral fever.

He listed the preventive and curative measures taken against various vector-borne diseases in all the 23 districts and the Government was periodically sensitizing doctors and paramedical staff through training programmes by experts.

He revealed that the experts had stated that it was not a life threatening disease and simple treatment like taking a Paracetamol was enough. District Medical and Health Officers (DM&HO) were provided with Rs. 3 lakhs each for purchase of emergency drugs.
