HC orders to maintain status quo on Kokapet lands
Hyderabad, August 28, 2006
A two member bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday directed the State Government to maintain status quo on the sale of Kokapet lands on the city outskirts in Ranga Reddy district. The bench dealing with a writ appeal filed by KSB Ali who contended that the land in question did not belong to the Government and the auction conducted by it was without any authority.
Earlier, a single judge had dismissed the writ petition stating that the ownership was a disputed question of fact cannot be gone into by the High Court in a writ petition. The bench admitted the appeal but made it clear that the order will not preclude the successful bidder.
In this connection, it may be recalled that the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) officials had auctioned 69 acres at Kokapet on July 20, 2006 with a record income of Rs.703 crores. The sale of Kokapet lands also resulted in an outcry by the Opposition parties charging the Government with forcibly acquiring lands belonging to the poor for a nominal price and selling them to Corporates at a premium rates.
