Congres never cheated TRS

Chief Minister turns tables on TRS

Hyderabad, August 23, 2006

Speaking to media, the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy along with eight of his Cabinet colleagues from the Telangana region refuted the allegations of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that the Congress party cheated the TRS. He said that at no time did the Congress made a categorical promise on the formation of Telangana state and the only commitment was that the matter could be addressed by another States Reorganization Commission (SRC)

The Chief Minister circulated photocopies of the letter signed by TRS senior leader A Narendra dated March 4, 2004 after consulting TRS president K.Chandrasekhara Rao and in the presence of Pranab Mukherjee accepting the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolution to refer the issue to the second SRC.

Responding to the representations by the Congress MLAs of Telangana region, the CWC passed a resolution seeking constitution of a second SRC and it was send to NDA Government in 2001 for appropriate action. The then NDA Government has rejected the same on the pretext that the issue of creating smaller states would affect national integration. He said that after forming UPA Government and at the instance of the TRS, it was agreed in the common minimum programme t initiate discussions with other parties and arrive a consensus. The State Congress leaders have left the same to Sonia Gandi for her final decision. He said that all the Telangana districts barring Hyderabad were included in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and also be included in the agricultural package to be announced by the Centre.
