Doctors calls off strike

Police arrests seven persons involved in the attack

Hyderabad, August 22, 2006

Following the arrest of seven persons involved in the attack on the Causality Medical Officer Dr.Bangariah on Sunday in King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam and initiation of proposals to improve security to doctors and an assurance that cases will not be booked against the doctors under section 304 A, the Andhra Pradesh Government Doctor's Association called off the strike. The decision was announced at a press conference addressed jointly by the Health Minister K.Rosaiah and APGDA office bearers on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy and leaders of various political parties appealed the striking doctors to call off the strike that paralyzed the functioning of the Government hospitals during the day. The APGDA secretary general D.Rangananth said that doctors had unanimously decided to call of the strike and resume all services immediately following accomplishment of the main demand of arresting the accused persons. He said that the protest by doctors was being called off in view of the assurance given by the Government that to issue orders not to apply section 304 A, initiation of measures to strengthen security and provision of medicare and service protection to Dr.Bangaraiah.

In the context above, the Principal Secretary in charge (Health) CBS Venkataramana said that Dr.Bangaraiah was airlifted to the State Capital and admitted into NIMS where his condition was said to be stable. The Health Minister K.Rosaiah said that the incident that took place on Sunday was quite unfortunate.
