Health Minister urges doctors to maintain restraint

Pleads to ensure that people are not to put to inconvenience

Hyderabad, August 21, 2006

In the wake of violent protest in King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam, the Minister for Health K.Rosaiah appealed the doctors, paramedical and other staff as well as the patients to maintain restraint and ensure people are not to put to inconvenience.

Speaking to media on Monday, the Minister said that the Government was planning to establish police outposts in major hospitals and strengthen security measures in tune with the suggestions of the Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association (APGDA). He further said that the Director of Medical Education (DME) has been deputed to inquire into the attack on the hospital staff by the relatives of a victim who allegedly died due to doctor's negligence. He commented that the incident that happened at KGH is quite unfortunate.

The Government would initiate stringent action against the staff concerned if they were found guilty else action would be initiated against those who indulged in the violence. The Health Minister said charges of corruption leveled by the victim's relatives would be probed but the Government was concerned about the attack on the staff.
