Hyderabad, August 20, 2006

At a wrap up meeting with the Central Team members, the Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy sought Rs.3616 crore Central Assistance for taking up temporary and permanent rehabilitation and restoration measures in the flood affected areas in the State.

The Revenue Minister D Prasada Rao speaking to media said that a memorandum was submitted to the team detailing the assistance required for various sectors. He said funds were sought for construction of four lakh houses through a special package under Indira Awas Yojana for the victims. He said that after the team submits its report to the Union Government, the Central Cabinet Sub Committee would decide on the quantum of assistance to be released. The team has visited eight districts to assess the devastation caused by floods.

The Chief Minister has said that the State had not witnessed such flood devastation in the recent past and underlined the importance of taking up permanent measures. The Central Team leader VK Saxena said that the need for revision of norms on relief would be recommended in their report. He however appreciated the efforts made by the Government in mitigating the people's sufferings.
