Five bogies of train destroyed in fire

Miraculous escape of passengers

Hyderabad, August 20, 2006

The fire broke out in the Chennai Hyderabad Express destroyed five bogies completely. According to sources, the fire broke out in one of the compartments minutes after the train left Secunderabad Railway station on Sunday morning. However, there is no human loss as the passengers got down at Secunderabad itself following an official announcement of delay in departure due to the derailment of a goods train.

It is reported that the fire broke out in S9 coach and spread to the adjoining S6,S7,S8 and S10 coaches. As the bogies went up in to flames, the train came to a halt when an alerted passenger pulled the chain and the passengers jumped to safety. The four compartments were empty as the all the passenger of the ill fated coaches had got down.

The Railway personnel delinked the train from the burning coaches and prevented further damage. A loud sound was heard in the coach no.S9 and immediately smoke emanating. Five fire tenders from rushed to the spot and control the fire after fighting for nearly three hours. South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager DN Mathur who rushed to the spot said it was difficult to confirm whether it is a case of sabotage or an accident. The estimated loss is put to Rs.2.5 crores.
