State Council meet in Guntur on September 2

Hyderabad, August 16, 2006

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has decided to launch a State wide agitation to press the Government to transfer powers to local bodies and they charged the Government with remaining negligent about devolution of powers to local bodies in accordance with the 73rd and 74th Amendments.

At a press conference, CPI State Secretary K.Narayana said that though the Congress had promised devolution of powers to local bodies while it was in the opposition, it was not exhibiting the same when it came to power. The Party has decided to chalk out details of the agitation during the State Council meeting scheduled to be held at Guntur on September 2.

The CPI State executive had discussed the problems faced by the people in flood affected areas and opined that the relief and rehabilitation measures taken by the Government was tardy and at the same time, the party has taken objection to a section of political parties raising arguments about the impact of Polavaram project.
