Aedes Aegypti mosquito could spread Chikungunys virus
Hyderabad, April 9, 2006The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that foreign nationals coming to Andhra Pradesh take precautions to protect themselves from the Aedes Aegypti mosquito that spreads the Chikungunys virus. The WHO has recommended that individuals of foreign origin protect themselves wearing clothing that minimizes skin exposure and applying inset repellents to exposed skin. It did not recommended special restrictions on travel or trade from the affected regions including States like Orissa and Maharastra.
The Chikungunya virus causes high fever accompanied by intense pain in the joints. The fever ebbs in a week with antibiotics but the joint pains are known to last for a month. The virus erupted suddenly about three months ago and its spread has reached epidemic proportions in some regions of the State. Researchers from the National Institute of Communicable Disease, New Delhi and National Institute of Virology Pune have collected over 3500 samples.
