Metro rail to have three corridors extending 60 kms
Hyderabad, April 7, 2006The Union Government has given clearance the metro rail project in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore and asked the State Governments to launch the projects. Union Minister S.Jaipal Reddy said on Friday. He said the Group of Ministers has cleared the metro rail projects for these three. The choice of rail track width specifications will be decided by the respective States and the Centre will provide viability gap funding the projects. He was speaking at a meeting organized by FICCI, which was attended by the Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy and FICCI chairman K.Poddar.
The metro rail will have three corridors extending up to 60 km simultaneously – Miyapur to Chaitanyapuri, Tarnaka to Hitec City via Secunderabad and Secunderabad to Falaknuma. He also said that the Centre has cleared the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) with a focus soon shifting the emphasis from personal transport to public transport. The policy had recommended cities to go for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and to ensure dedicated tracks for cyclists and pedestrians.
