Blasts boats as retaliation to killing of naxals

Maoists hijacked two tourist boats in the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir carrying 234 tourists on Nagarjunakonda Island. The boats were taken about 12 km upstream and then were blown up. This is in retaliation of the police who killed four naxals in an encounter. While the boats carrying 234 passengers along with nine crewmembers landed at the Nagarjunakonda jetty, five naxals, three of them in olive green and two in civilian dress took control of the boats and asked the tourists to alight.

Though the crew had walkie-talkies but they were not allowed to use it and also alerted the tourists not to use the cell phones. They took away the launches along with the crew towards Srisailam about 100 km upstream on the river Krishna. The naxals released the crewmembers and blew up the boats. The State Tourism officials said that the two boats cost Rs.2.5 crore.
