Soundarrajan asks Govt to exempt temple from Endowments
Hyderabad, April 3, 2006
In a bid to take over Chilkur Balaji temple by the Endowments Department, citing the High Court's direction has taken an interesting twist with the Supreme Court clarification. The Apex Court while disposing the petition clarified that the Andhra Pradesh High Court had not directed the Government to appoint a trust board for Chilkur temple. It further said that the State Government should take an independent decision on the issue of constitution of a Board of Trustees to administer the Chilkur Balaji temple.
In the light of Apex Court's clarification, the hereditary priest Soundarrajan appealed to the Government to take a policy decision to give exemption to the Chilkur temple from the purview of Endowments department on the basis of its unique traditions. He also cited that similar exemptions were given to Saibaba temple and Sri Kanyakapareswari temple. Dr Soundarrajan said that the Chilkur temple issue could be referred to the committee, which had earlier submitted a report on demolition of the thousand-pillar mandapam.
